Keep your login to yourself and tell us if you think someone else is using it. Pick a username you're happy to see in public, because it appears on your sightings and as the credit on your photos. You can change it on your profile once every 30 days. If you're young, please don't use your real name. You can close your account at any time from your account settings.
Only upload photos you took yourself, or that you have permission to share. You keep the copyright.
Why share openly? Monkey puzzles are endangered in their Chilean homeland, and a photo of one in a Welsh front garden could help a botanist, a biodiversity database or a Wikipedia article, with your name on it every time. Open licences are what let that happen without anyone having to track you down to ask.
Photos added from 25 September 2026 are published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0), credited to your username. Anyone, including Monkey Puzzle Watch, can then copy, adapt and share them for any purpose, including commercially (for example in research, books or fundraising), as long as they credit you. The licence can't be withdrawn for copies already made: deleting a photo removes it from this site, but lawful copies elsewhere may remain.
Photos added before 25 September 2026 stay under the terms they were given with: a licence for Monkey Puzzle Watch to display them and share tree records for research, which ends if you delete them. You can open them up under CC BY 4.0 from your account settings if you like.
For titles, descriptions, measurements and comments, you give Monkey Puzzle Watch a free, non-exclusive licence to display them on the site and include them in the tree record. Facts about a tree (where it is, how tall, when it was seen) aren't owned by anyone, so tree records may be kept and shared as described in the privacy notice.
We review submissions and may edit, hide or remove anything that breaks these rules, raises a privacy or safety concern, or is simply not a monkey puzzle. We may suspend accounts that keep breaking them. If you spot a problem, including a photo that affects your privacy, report it on the sighting page or contact us.
Public map pins are deliberately placed 100 to 200 metres from the real tree, and everything here is contributed by volunteers, so treat it as a guide rather than gospel. A tree being on the map is never an invitation to visit it on private land.
Monkey Puzzle Watch is a free community project provided as it is. We do our best to keep it accurate and available but can't promise either. We aren't responsible for how you use the information here, including any trip to see a tree. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, and nothing affects your legal rights as a consumer.
These terms are governed by Scots law, and the Scottish courts can hear any dispute. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you keep the protection of your local consumer law and can also bring proceedings in the courts where you live.
We'll update these terms as the site grows and tell registered users about significant changes. We won't widen the licence on photos you've already added without your agreement.
