A fine specimen in its natural habitat
This is a monkey puzzle tree plantation at Monreith on the Maxwell Estate (until 2021) just inland from Port William in Wigtownshire. There are over 100 trees. The Maxwell family had a keen interest in horticulture and zooology. Gavin Maxwell (Ring of bright Water) is best known, but his paternal grandfather Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell - (1845 -1937) is credited as the man behind the monkey puzzle wood.
